KIDSFEST SHELLHARBOUR - GROWING TOGETHER

The Illawarra’s largest event aimed at children, KidsFest Shellharbour will broaden its reach this year, welcoming children aged 0-12 years.

The week long festival, on from 9-15 May 2010, is now in its third year but for the first time will cater for the 6-12 year olds in addition to pre-school aged children.

kf_2010_posterEvent Coordinator Carla Brookes says “KidsFest Shellharbour 2010 will reach an even bigger audience than last year with daytime activities for the 0-5s as well as activities after school and on the weekends to include children up to 12 years.”

KidsFest Shellharbour 2010 will feature some of the highlights of last year’s program such as the and The Biggest Playgroup, The Mother’s Day Picnic at Illawarra Light Rail and exploring the planes at the HARS Museum.

Also on again this year is a diverse range of activities including the Children’s Health and Development Expo, the Milking Demonstration at a local dairy farm and children’s performances at Stockland Shellharbour.

Some new activities will have a cultural flavour including Aboriginal arts and history storytelling featuring Richard Campbell with the Little Ngargens dancers.

Local AFL clubs will be offering introductory skills sessions and St George Illawarra Dragons will be running a Backyard League Skills Clinic at the Warilla North Celebration, so children up to the age of 12 years will continue to experience interactive fun throughout the city.

Other new events such as bike safety checks and fishing by the Lake hosted by the PCYC together with the NSW Police Aboriginal Liaison Officer and the Illawarra Koori Men’s Support Group will be open for families.

KidsFest Shellharbour is all about celebrating the area’s children, recognising that Shellharbour is a child-friendly City.
Carla Brookes says businesses and community groups in Shellharbour have taken up the challenge to make their services more attractive and welcoming to families.

“The KidsFest Shellharbour ‘Play Spot’ program is our way of recognising child-friendly places,” says Carla. “Businesses that already have child-friendly practices will be recognised through this program, but it’s also an opportunity for all businesses to make changes to attract families.”

A full program of events will be released in mid April, pick up a copy of the program at businesses around Shellharbour area and also on our website www.kidsfestshellharbour.com.au Call Shellharbour Tourism on 4221 6169 for more information or email carla@kidsfestshellharbour.com.au.
